Latest news: Aqua exercise benefits

Aqua aerobics is a fantastic way to keep fit, particularly for people with certain health problems or those recovering from an injury.

Aqua is generally more low-impact than land-based aerobics however the classes have most of the fat-burning and endurance-building benefits that you get from other forms of aerobic activity, whilst improving muscle tone, strength and mobility.

An aerobic water exercise work-out of around 30 minutes, will help you burn about 300 calories. Classes at Aquarena run for 45 minutes and include a warm-up, cool-down and stretching exercises. The main advantage of exercising in water is that it offers resistance in all directions, compared to land exercises where you work only against gravity.

Due to the waters cushioning effect, this form of exercise is particularly beneficial to anyone at risk from bodily stress, including the elderly, overweight, or those recovering from soft tissue injury. It’s also particularly good for pregnant women and is an ideal post-natal exercise.

The main benefits of Aqua exercise are:

Great for all fitness levels
Good for weight loss / fat burning
Builds strength and flexibility
Increased aerobic endurance
Greater flexibility
Increased muscle tone
Excellent cardio-respiratory exercise
High calorie burning during and after a workouts
Renews your energy level as it releases your stress and tension

Exercising in water requires you to support only 50% of your body weight, making exercises easier to perform and the water’s buoyancy lowers the risk of stress-related injuries.

A massaging effect is created when your muscles are surrounded by water. Aqua classes will include things like jogging, boxing, buoyancy work with dumbbells, deep water work and dance movements that are accompanied by motivating music which will encourage you to work even harder.

At Aquarena, due to the high demand from members and the community, we are able to offer four different types of classes which cater for all fitness levels.

These include:

Aqua Power: Achieve fitness for any level of participant (Beg to Adv) using a variety of techniques and equipment. Includes buoyancy dumbbells, deep water activities, strength and toning exercises.

It is always fantastic to hear the many stories from the Aqua participants of how coming along to Aqua improves their Arthritis, relieves back pain and joint problems, aids in the recovery of soft tissue injuries, helps combat obesity and lessens the risk of developing cardiac problems. Aqua also provides active exercise for MS sufferers and people with disabilities in an inclusive environment.
